The US State Department has authorized a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Zambia, allowing the African nation to purchase Bell 412 helicopters at an estimated cost of $100 million. The proposed deal aims to strengthen Zambia’s capacity to carry out peacekeeping, regional security operations, and disaster relief efforts.

Zambia has requested the medium-lift transport helicopters to support its long-range missions, capable of operating in diverse weather conditions. The helicopters are intended to be used for a variety of purposes, including humanitarian aid delivery, disaster response, and peacekeeping operations, aligning with Zambia’s ongoing commitment to regional stability and support for peace efforts across Africa.

The sale package also includes training for Zambian pilots and maintainers, as well as necessary ground support equipment and contractor field support. The purchase would be funded through a combination of foreign military assistance and Zambian national funds, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

The helicopters will be provided by Bell, the Texas-based manufacturer of the Bell 412. The company is expected to lead the contract and support Zambia with the necessary equipment and services.

According to the DSCA, this sale would significantly enhance Zambia’s security capabilities, reinforcing its role as a key partner in promoting political stability and economic progress in the South-Central Africa region.

Zambia already operates eight Bell 412 helicopters, which were acquired through an $80 million grant with the United States in September 2023. This grant covered the purchase of four helicopters, along with maintenance, parts, and training over a three-year period.

In addition to this new acquisition, Zambia’s Air Force recently incorporated two Bell 412EP helicopters into its fleet in March 2024, further bolstering its operational readiness for peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.
