On December 31, 2024, President Hakainde Hichilema received a special visit from the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Perici, at Zambia’s State House. The meeting focused on Zambia’s economic progress, the government’s debt reduction goals, and the Catholic Church’s role in the country’s development, particularly in education, healthcare, and social welfare.

President Hichilema thanked Pope Francis for his leadership, especially in advocating for debt cancellation for developing nations. He highlighted that Zambia, like many low-income countries, had faced significant debt distress exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The President emphasized that the debt relief Zambia is seeking within the G20 framework would be a vital step toward reducing the national debt and unlocking funds for crucial investments and international trade partnerships.

The President also praised the Catholic Church’s continued support in improving the welfare of Zambians. He emphasized that his administration remains committed to collaborating with religious institutions to strengthen social services and contribute to the country’s development.

During the meeting, Archbishop Perici delivered a special message from Pope Francis, highlighting the themes of peace, harmony, and debt cancellation. The Pope encouraged continued cooperation between the Church and the Zambian government, emphasizing the importance of building stronger ties between Zambia and the Holy See.

President Hichilema expressed his appreciation for the message and recalled his warm reception when he visited the Vatican in 2022. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mulambo Haimbe, also noted Zambia’s long-standing diplomatic relations with the Holy See, further reinforcing the importance of the message and strengthening the bond between Zambia and the Vatican.
