Brenda Tambatamba, the Labour and Social Security Minister, has urged the African Federation of Miners and Mineral Wealth to prioritize worker well-being in the mining industry.

The government’s commitment to worker welfare was highlighted. Tambatamba emphasized that the Federation should negotiate for better working conditions that align with the government’s goals.

This statement was made during a business dinner in Lusaka, hosted by the Federation. The event marked the beginning of a five-day exchange program, organized by the Mine Workers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ). The program, running from January 16 to January 21, 2025, aims to strengthen ties and share knowledge within the mining sector.

Economic transformation and job creation are key areas of focus in the development plan. Tambatamba referred to President Hakainde Hichilema’s “champions’ league” as a vision for strengthening workers’ organizations. She emphasized the importance of Tripartism, highlighting that the government and workers must collaborate for the country’s progress.

The Federation was also encouraged to work with the government to shape mining sector policies. Tambatamba reassured that the government is focused on workers’ rights within the legal framework, ensuring their welfare remains a priority.

Support for the workers’ movement was reaffirmed by Tambatamba, who stressed the value of collaboration and Tripartism.

Ashraf Shehata, Assistant Treasurer of the African Federation of Miners and Mineral Wealth, spoke on the need to defend Africa’s resources. He argued that these resources are crucial for sustainable development. Shehata proposed the creation of a company for all unions to exploit and benefit from Africa’s natural wealth.

Joseph Chewe, MUZ president, praised President Hichilema and Tambatamba for their leadership in preventing strikes in the mining sector. He called for continued efforts to ensure industrial harmony.
