A Kenyan teacher, Orina Dominic, has been nominated for the prestigious Global Teacher Award, a recognition that comes with a Ksh 29 million prize. Orina, who teaches at Kugerwet Primary School in Konoin Constituency, Bomet County, has been selected as one of the 50 finalists representing Africa in the global competition. His nomination follows an extensive process that saw over 5,000 teachers from 89 countries vying for a spot.

Orina’s innovative work with the school’s 4K Club has earned him national and international recognition. The club, known for its agricultural activities, has gained attention for its role in promoting sustainable farming practices among students. With the introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Orina saw an opportunity to integrate his passion for farming with the school’s new educational framework.

Under his guidance, the 4K Club began cultivating a variety of crops, including amaranthus, spinach, capsicum, and Sukuma Wiki. The club also ventured into rabbit farming, which not only provides manure for the crops but also generates additional income for the school. The integration of organic farming practices has been a key aspect of Orina’s approach, providing practical lessons in sustainability while enhancing students’ hands-on learning experience.

Orina’s dedication to innovative teaching methods has also earned him local accolades, including being named the Best Innovative Teacher in the Cheptalal Zone. His efforts to share his work on social media have helped him gain widespread recognition and inspired other educators across the country.

The Global Teacher Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of teaching,” celebrates educators who have made a significant impact on their students and communities. Orina’s inclusion in the final 50 highlights the global shift toward recognizing teaching practices that embrace creativity, sustainability, and community involvement.

His nomination for the prestigious award brings pride not only to Bomet County but to Kenya as a whole, showcasing the country’s commitment to excellence in education.
