Detroit Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who became widely known for quoting Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech during President Donald J. Trump’s inauguration, has shared that his father is in prison for murder.
Sewell, who delivered the closing prayer on January 20, stated that he was born and raised on the East side of Detroit and mentored by those involved in violence.
He explained, “I am a student of the street. My dad is in prison for murder today. For a kid like me to have the chance to pray over our president and, quite frankly, over the world, I believe it is Dr. King’s dream being fulfilled.”
He emphasized the significance of seeing his mother’s prayers come to fruition.
Sewell also highlighted Martin Luther King Jr.’s message in his famous speech, stating that King made it clear that “America must strive to be a great nation.” He noted that the MAGA movement aligns with this vision of greatness for America.
“To pray that prayer on Martin King’s birthday is to celebrate that we, as Americans, will see the dream fulfilled through our President Donald Trump,” Sewell concluded.
