The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was re-elected for a second term, during the presidential election of September 7, 2024, with 84.30% of the votes cast, according to the final results announced Saturday by the Constitutional Court.

 

Born on November 17, 1945 in Mecheria (wilaya of Naâma), Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his school career in the wilaya of Sidi Bel Abbès, where his family took up residence after intimidation and persecution by the French colonizer because of his father’s nationalist speeches and his membership in the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulemas.

 

He joined the free school of imams in 1953 and passed the middle school exam in 1957. He continued his studies at the regional high school, then at the Benzerdjeb high school, and obtained his baccalaureate in 1965.

 

In 1969, he graduated from the National School of Administration (specializing in Economics and Finance) in the second class named after the martyr and hero Larbi Ben M’hidi.

 

Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune began his professional career in the capital of the wilaya of Béchar, then called Saoura, encompassing Béchar, Tindouf and Adrar. He continued his career that he began as an administrator, then project manager, before being promoted to the position of Secretary General of the wilaya of Djelfa in 1974.

 

In 1976, he was transferred to the wilaya of Adrar in the same position, then to the wilaya of Batna in 1977, before occupying the same position in the wilaya of M’Sila in 1982.

 

Subsequently, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune held the positions of wali of Adrar, Tiaret and Tizi Ouzou respectively.

 

He was appointed Minister Delegate for Local Authorities in 1991, Minister of Communication and Culture in 1999 and Minister of Housing and Urban Planning in 2001.

 

In 2012, he was again appointed Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, before taking up the post of interim Minister of Commerce in 2017. On 24 May 2017, he was appointed Prime Minister.

 

Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune first ran for the highest office in the presidential election of December 12, 2019, which he won.
